If you’re thinking about replacing a “clunker” appliance it might be smart to wait a few more months. The Department of Energy (DOE) is gearing up for a program to encourage people to replace refrigerators, air conditioners and washers for more energy efficient models. This is one time when spending to save might make sense.
The program is expected to launch early next year on a state-by-state basis. Older appliances – generally those 15 years or older—are less efficient than the new models. So with a new model you can save money on operating costs and also benefit from a rebate when you purchase an authorized model.
The article from SmartMoney outlines the program, though details are yet to come. Unlike the car clunker program, this program will be run by each state and models and appliances that qualify will probably vary by state. /
You might also already be able to benefit from an energy efficiency rebate when you turn an old model for a new Energy Star rated appliance. The DOE website provides a search for rebates available in each state
So if you’re looking for ways to cut costs, this might be a smart way to both save on the price of a new appliance and save every month on your electricity bill.
